Declutter to de-stress

If you’re reading this article you are probably well aware of the stress-inducing properties of clutter, so let’s look at why it can make us feel on edge and what simple steps you can take to address it…

Be in charge of your space

I define clutter as an assortment of things (usually unrelated to each other) lying about in no particular order, and it is this ‘dis-order’ that can trigger feelings of stress. We have very little control over so many aspects of our lives, so when we come back into our homes and our own space feels just as chaotic as the outside world that can be really stressful. Which is why decluttering your space to reduce the amount of ‘stuff’, and organising the items you choose to keep can be such a positive therapy - it creates a feeling of control and order in your life.

Declutter for productivity

Visually busy spaces can also be overwhelming and distracting making it difficult to focus on the tasks you want to get done. By decluttering and organising, you can create a more peaceful environment that will not only support you to be more productive but also save you time as you don’t waste hours of your life searching for what you need!

Tips for maintaining a calm space

To bring a sense of control and calm to your home, try my top organising tips:

  • Follow a reset routine
Take just a few minutes each day to reset your spaces (make your bed, clear the dirty dishes) so that those rooms are more welcoming and calm spaces to return to.

  • Monotask
Multitasking can be counterproductive and cause stress. Focus on one task at a time, giving it your full attention.

  • Create a command centre
Create a single location in your home for a paperwork ‘command centre’, so that all incoming papers have a place to land before you deal with them. Then take 10 minutes each week to sort through and file away.

  • Don’t put it down, put it away
Repeat the organisers’ mantra of 'don't put it down, put it away' whenever you find yourself with items in your hands. Don’t fall for your brain’s line of “I’ll sort that out in a minute” – go and put it where it belongs now!
